We Can Most Certainly All Agree

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

The central question is: Can we all agree to make the old, new again?! As I can only answer for me, here goes…Absolutely. We are all trying to live a life for the first time (that we know of) and the truth of the matter is that we are all responsible for our own actions. How will our actions hold up another 60 years from now? Let us consider, how will your future generations of children, grandchildren great-grandchildren, etc. feel if your actions were truly represented and put on display at their second grade show and tell? At this point one could argue, we have all truly done things that we are not proud of, and that again is absolutely true for most people that are being honest with themselves.

In moving the idea forward, I have a few conditions before we begin:

1) We do not discuss ANY modern era/today’s ideas

2) We only discuss ideas that are 60+ years or older

3) We seek out those from the past whose ideas align with our own

As we continue this idea roller coaster, who are the like minded people, from the past, that would be in the room with you? I would be willing to bet that everyone (good, bad and/or indifferent) would be quite comfortable with the company they are imagining. The issue is everyone’s ideas of good and bad can be as different as night and day. As Shakespeare once said, “There is no good or bad. Only thinking makes it so.” In the western world, William Shakespeare influenced modern language more than any other person that I am aware of. However, I would like to disagree with Shakespeare just a little bit. On the surface there are things that are universally good and bad.

Thinking is directly related to and the basis of our beliefs. Long story short we cannot knock someone for their individual beliefs just because they do not subscribe to what we believe. Let respect be our guiding light as we come across someone that is diametrically opposed to ours. If someone who thinks differently than you fails to demonstrate respect toward your space, you can easily remove yourself from the conversation. Do not do it thinking you conceded anything. Rather, you would detach yourself from that person/situation in order to prevent them from dragging you into being someone that you are not. A direct quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, “Never let a man drag you so low that you hate him.” The choice is up to you.

I believe and highly encourage everyone to think. More than that, no one should tell you what to think. I would like to reach through time and tap into Marcus Aurelius ( AKA, The Last Great Emperor), emperor from 161 to 180 AD. He was last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors. Marcus Aurelius once said, “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” Or at the very least, try. Let’s make the old, new.

As always, if you enjoyed this blog, hit the like button. Also, please share on social media, with friends, etc. because we have to get the word out. Let all of the good people (wherever you are across America) communicate with one another and come back together.
